KickOut Cancer - Fifth Annual CHARITY Youth Soccer Tournament
"Honors are not what you receive for the things you do. Honor is what you receive for doing them." - John F. Kennedy
Duquesne University's Greek students participate in a variety of philanthropies and community service projects. For those of you who might not know, a philanthropy is any fundraising event that benefits a worthy cause. Every chapter at DU holds an annual philanthropic event. Some philanthropies at DU include a 5K run/walk that benefits the Children's Institute of Pittsburgh, a "big man on campus" contest that benefits the speech and hearing impaired, and a Soccer Tournament that benefits the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. These are just a few of the many events that are held throughout the year in Greek Life for the entire campus community.
Philanthropies at Duquesne University are FANTASTIC! One particular annual event is Greek Week, which includes a series of weeklong competitions among the chapters, and concludes with the traditional Greek Sing at the end of the week. Recently, Greek Week 2006 raised over $11,000.00 to help children in third world countries with medical needs. Greek Week at Duquesne has raised over $60,000 in recent years for numerous local and national charitable groups. One group has just recently begun a three-year commitment to the Adopt-A-Highway program. Another fundraiser is a mock version of the popular game show Singled Out, which has proven to be very popular with the student body.
Greek students at DU are also active in a variety of community service projects. At any time, you can find a Greek student coaching a city league basketball team or participating in the YMCA Big Brother-Big Sister program. Many chapters on our campus volunteer in numerous programs and social services throughout the city of Pittsburgh. Greeks are always active in organizing numerous campus wide annual blood and food drives. Order of Omega, the Greek leadership honor society, is also involved in service related projects on campus.
As Greeks, we take advantage of every opportunity to give back to the Pittsburgh community. Not only are we helping the underprivileged and needy, we are also gaining understanding and compassion for those less fortunate than ourselves. It truly is great to be Greek when you feel as if you have the ability to impact others lives. Greek students at Duquesne University pride themselves in their strong support of the Pittsburgh community and are continually striving for excellence on campus.
